Champions of Peace ~ PBL

For the last four weeks of Term 3 we have been learning about ‘How we can be champions on peace’.

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are, the dove, the v sign, the peace sign and the olive branch. These are just a few of the many peace signs.

The dove is a symbol of peace because God sent it to find the olive branch which is another symbol of peace.

With these symbols in mind, I created a Peace artwork. My peace artwork represents peace because it has the peace symbol and there are people around holding hands. I chose the peace symbol because I wanted to make it look like the earth with the people around it but still is the peace sign. I also coloured in the peace sign with green and blue, because those colours are the peace colours.

We also researched some real life champions of peace and wrote a short biography. I wrote about Mother Teresa because I think she is a champion of peace. This is because she shows lots of the Peace Principles, and is a very caring person.

We also created a peace prayer book. I have attached my peace prayer book here.

I enjoyed learning about peace because I learned about some hardships that people had to go through, and we thought about ways that we could help. I also learned about being a peacemaker and the importance of it.

I learnt that it is important to have peace, otherwise the world will keep breaking out in war. I also learnt different peace prayers from different religions. I thought that was very cool, because I could see what other religions peace prayers were like.

One way I can be a Champion of Peace is following the principals of peace, and treating everyone equally and with respect.

Science

Kia ora, and welcome back to my blog.

In science we have been focusing on electricity. This week in our science workshop, we looked at the question “Can you get the buzzer to work”. To make the experiment work, here were all of the things we used:

  • Four nails ( Two copper and two zinc )
  • Two beakers ( One labelled “T” and one labelled “S” )
  • An empty specimen jar
  • Tap water
  • Salt
  • Buzzer

My hypothesis was that I thought that once we added the water and salt, you would be able to hear a buzzing sound.

I found out my hypothesis was part correct, because you could hear the buzzing sound after you added the salt in the water, but the nails have to be on the correct wire. If they are not, you will not be able to hear the buzzing sounds.

In order to make the experiment work, we had to put the zinc nail on the red wire and the copper nail on the black wire. The reason why you could only hear the buzzing sound after you put the salt in the water is because the ions then separate into sodium and chloride and it completes the circuit.

If I was to do this experiment again, I know know that you can only hear the buzzing sound after you do the correct steps.

Something I found interesting was that it was harder to do the experiment than I though it was going to be. I thought you just had to pour the salt in the water but you also had to make sure the nails were on the right wires and you had the right amount of water and salt.

What kind of science experiment have you tried before?

My Maths

This week for maths we saw the food options for the morning breakfast next week. The options were hotcakes, porridge, sausage sizzle, and hot chocolate. We had to make a tree diagram to find out how many different food combos there could be.

Here is my create:

Have you made a tree diagram before?

My Reading || Wk7 T2

Kia Ora,

Welcome to my blog. This week in my group, we had to read three texts and make a venn diagram to compare them. The texts were, New beginnings, My name is Rez, From Afghanistan to Aotearoa. The two texts I chose were My name is Rez and From Afghanistan to Aotearoa. I chose these texts because I felt like those two texts had more in common than in New Beginnings. Here is my create:

Have you done a Venn diagram before? What was it about?

PBL Showcase

Over the course of term one we have looked at the question: How can we help build a resilient community? We are using something called The Resilience Project to understand simple tricks to make our lives better. It’s called Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.

Being grateful is like saying thank you for people helping you and maybe doing a nice act back to them. Empathy is putting yourself in other peoples shoes. It is feeling how other people feel. You can maybe do something nice to them. Mindfulness is being mindful. Being mindful is maybe going outside and taking a long walk or sitting down and observing all the things that are around you.

Here is a video I made about G.E.M

The whole school had a showcase evening to look at all the students’ creations and learn more about The Resilience Project.

Here is an invite I made:

For the showcase evening I worked with Eilish and Bonnie.

We decided to create lip balm because we thought that lip balm was a form of self care and self care is mindfulness.

Here is my final creation:

I now know more about what Empathy is and how I can use it in my life to be happier.

Throughout the creating process I feel like I collaborated with my group really well. I could have been better at being more organised and buying the stuff beforehand and not leaving stuff till last minute.

If I was to do this again, next time I would find a recipe that doesn’t go so hard when you don’t use it for a while, so I would put more coconut oil to make it softer.

Question ~ What kind of mindfulness do you do?

G.O.A.T of Golf

Hi Everyone, Welcome to my blog!

We had an option of: Are E-Sports considered a real sport and what the G.O.A.T’s (Greatest of all Time) have in common. As you can see by my title I chose what G.O.A.T’s have in common. For our create task we had to choose a G.O.A.T of a sports and write about them. I chose golf and the G.O.A.T was Tiger Woods. Here is my poster.

Reflection ~ While making this poster I learned that even if you have a gift for that particular thing you have to work even harder to get where you want to be.

Question ~ Who do you think the G.O.A.T is of your favourite sports?

My year 8 goals

This week for writing we had three different options for our create. I chose to do “What my year goals are for this year”. I have thought about what abilities or skills I need for high school. For example I wrote “get better at my studies” because I want to excel in my studies. Here is my list.

I think I will be able to achieve my goals if I work hard.

Do you have any similar goals to mine?

Term 1

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. I am going to tell you all that has happened this term.

We started off the term by playing lots of games but then we learnt about the Treaty of the Waitangi. Me and Chydale did a script about it and we talked about some of the facts.

We also did tech. This term for tech i was in 7b and 7b did food tech this term. We made stuff like pizza towers, french toast, frittatas, banana muffins, muesli in a jar, pancakes, Anzac biscuits and cheese scones. It was really fun going to tech because we got to learn new cooking skills and recipes.

For PBL, this term’s topic was survival. We made a survival game. Me and my friends made a game that has lots of different stages that you had to get past. Another thing we did was we got to choose four different options which were food, games, compass work or hut building. I chose food and we made a scroggin. A scroggin is basically a trail mix. We also learnt about food that makes us fuller for longer.

So that is what happened this term. I did lots of fun stuff. Thank you for reading my blog.
